Description

Reporting to the Operations Manager - Engineering, the Senior Protection Engineer will be accountable for executing projects through sound engineering expertise and project management, engaging in relationship building activities with clients, and identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering.


Specifically focusing on solving problems involving power systems, the successful candidate will provide technical expertise, plan and execute projects, provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership to team members, and assist developing new business; ultimately providing exceptional client service through the completion of power systems projects.


Sectors served by Magna IV Engineering include power utilities, gas and oil industry, bulk material handling, pulp and paper, industrial substations, generation facilities, co-generation units, and others.

Accountabilities

Responsibilities of a Senior Engineer include aspects of technical expertise, engineering knowledge of electrical power systems for utilities, heavy industrial customers and some commercial applications, project management, business development, leadership and mentoring of team members as needed.


Engineering & Design (75% time commitment)

Performance of some or all the following:

  • electrical power system studies (load flow, short circuits, arc flash, motor starting, grounding, etc.)

  • protective relay setting development and relay setting file development

  • software assisted electrical studies: ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP

  • hand-calculations for electrical studies

  • medium and high voltage electrical design

  • design of industrial control schemes, development of control narratives, flex-logic, and implementations of automatic power transfer schemes

  • technical report writing

  • application of knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code C22.1 Part 1

  • application of knowledge of IEEE Standards related to medium and high voltage installations and studies

  • medium voltage switchgear design

  • high voltage substation design

  • design of medium and high voltage protection systems (schematics and wiring)

  • configuration of protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.)

  • computation of complex relay settings and logic

  • support for development of proposals and estimates for areas of practice

  • Excellent communication written and verbal

Project Management/Support (15% time commitment)

  • Oversee all aspects of assigned projects (on projects that are not large enough to require a separate dedicated Project Manager staff)

  • Plan resources effectively and work collaboratively with other teams, departments, and regions to share resources

  • Manage projects ranging in values from approximately $10,000 to $250,000

  • Complete all project deliverables to the satisfaction of the client

  • Assign qualified staff responsibilities clearly and using leadership and communication skills, including engineering work, drafting, quality assurance, etc.

  • Maintain strong communication and rapport with the client

  • Ensure safe work processes are followed with each job and a culture of safety is fostered

  • Ensure work is properly executed, on time, within budgets

  • Ensure completion of reports and follow up with clients to ensure satisfaction and completeness of work performed

  • Complete project invoicing with the support of accounting personnel in a timely manner

  • Maintain acceptable profit margins on all projects

Client Management and Business Development (10% time commitment):

  • Identify and seek out leads with existing and potential clients. Coordinate activities with Marketing personnel to achieve a collaborative effort with the goal of creating confidence within industry for Magna IV Engineering’s capabilities.

  • Actively network within the industry by participating at trade shows and seminars

  • Interact and collaborate with Senior Engineers from other teams, departments, and offices to share client information and seek shared opportunities

  • Identify, coordinate, and implement operations initiatives that will provide solutions that satisfy the problems of our clients

  • Foster a culture of strong client relationships and support team members in establishing strong relationships and communication with clients

  • Identify opportunities for proposals, draft proposals, and explain/negotiate proposals with clients or delegate to the applicable project manager(s)

  • Develop proposals based on audits, studies, and recommendations in response to client requests

  • Interact with clients in a courteous and professional manner

People Leadership (throughout all work):

  • Manage the performance of any project-assigned personnel through ongoing coaching, recognition, performance management (this role is not responsible to supervise staff aside from project-assignments)

  • Mentoring and providing an always-open door for all staff to ask questions and develop their skills.

  • Identify and develop personnel and ensure that management can develop team members within their current role and for future roles; to be a source of talent and growth for Magna and all staff.

  • Support and enact employee engagement practices to ensure we attract and retain the best talent.

Success Measurements

Success of the Senior Engineer will be based on the following core metrics:

  • Successful completion of engineering projects, including minimal errors when undergoing Quality Assurance checking of engineered work

  • Hours and budget management on projects and assignments

  • Ability to coach and mentor others, while developing own skills in new and challenging areas and software (feedback of mentees will be solicited)

Required Skills and Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Professional Electrical Engineering or Professional Technologist degree required, registered in (or able to register immediately in) Alberta (APEGA).

  • A minimum 7 years experience in power system design and studies work including short circuit, phase coordination, arc flash, grounding step and touch, load flow, harmonics, etc.

  • Ability to perform electrical engineering studies independently and competently

  • Capability to create protective relay program setting files in a variety of software platforms (including EnerVista Launchpad and AcSELerator), and capability to bench-configure relays.

  • Experience and working knowledge of ETAP, SKM, EasyPower or equivalent software tools

  • Capability to design power systems including engineering and specification development for switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, cables, trays, e-houses, distribution centers, protection and control elements, and other electrical components.

  • Must have a valid drivers’ license and be able to travel (within Alberta)

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE SKILLS & ASSETS

  • Ability to multi-task, exercise good judgment and prioritize workload through outstanding organizational skills

  • Broad knowledge in industrial, utility and commercial environments

  • Specialized knowledge in a particular area may be an asset (such as: Utility and AESO power system studies)

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage, motivate and work within a team to achieve results

  • Possesses a positive attitude, is highly self-motivated, energetic, passionate and reliable

  • Dedicated to providing exceptional client experiences to our internal and external clients

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with adept relationship management skills to interact with various levels within an organization

  • Proven commitment to safety

  • The willingness to travel and work flexible shifts, which include occasional weekends, evenings and statutory holidays.

  • The ability to work in an office environment, at industrial sites, and from a home office.

  • Willingness to work on an hourly basis including above and below 40 hour weeks during peaks and valleys in workload, with an average fulltime (40 hour/week) workload.
